Our Mission

Detour Company Theatre provides theatre training and performance experiences for adults with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities, giving them authentic opportunities to develop artistry, demonstrate courage and collaboration, experience joy and participate in the sharing of musical theatre with the entire community.

These adults may have disabilities including (but not limited to) autism, cognitive and physical challenges, deafness and blindness, which require additional support and adaptive techniques. We work to create rewarding programming that supports  existing skills and celebrates the development of new ones.

We also serve as a resource to the community both to support those who want to work in the field of arts and disability, and to those who are eager to celebrate the talent creativity and artistic potential of all people.

Our Programs

Mainstage - This is our largest program typically including about 50 actors with disabilities and 10-15 support professionals. We perform full-scale, musical productions with big sets, big songs, and big audiences! Previous productions include Mean Girls, Footloose: The Musical (90-Minute Version), Little Shop of Horrors, James and the Giant Peach, Newsies, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

Detour Academy - Detour Academy offers innovative and exciting drama classes, clubs, and workshops. This is a great place for you to learn all about theatre in a positive, fun, and supportive environment or to gain professional experience as a Teaching Artist Intern.

Detour on Tour - Detour on Tour is our traveling troupe of performers. Detour on Tour is designed with more experienced Detour Actors in mind and requires a greater time commitment than Mainstage or Detour Academy. Performances can range over a 4-month period!

Detour on Sonoran Living

Detour is a place where we can participate freely and fully as artists.

Judges at the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee are in an uproar behind their table because of something wild a contestant has done.
