Detour Academy offers innovative and exciting classes, clubs, and workshops. This is a great place for you to learn all about theatre and the humanities in a positive, fun, and supportive environment or to gain professional experience as a Teaching Artist Intern.
Detour Academy serves two specific functions:
1. Offering classes on theatre and the humanities, taught by professionals, to adults with disabilities and the general public. Classes are set up to be accessible to adults with disabilities, but they are open to anyone interested in taking them—including neurotypical, nondisabled folks with a connection to the disability community including Interpreters, Direct Support Professionals, family, and friends!
2. Detour Academy is also a space for adults with disabilities who are interested in developing their teaching skills as Teaching Artist Interns. Teaching Artist Interns are paid for their work and given support in teaching subjects that they are familiar with.
At Detour, our goal is to be a shining example of including adults with disabilities at all levels—from performers to students to teachers to directors and even on our Board of Directors. As such, former Detour Academy Teaching Artist Interns are given special first consideration when we open applications for new Teaching Artists each season.
New classes are offered every Fall, Spring and Summer session.
